In a report Thursday, Pfizer's sales and market share of erectile dysfunction drugs rose by 8%, to $5.4 billion.
"We're seeing an opportunity for the company to create a new market where men who are seeking help for erectile dysfunction can find it," said Michael Reisman, president of Pfizer Inc.
The new erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra, is the company's first product to be developed and marketed in the U. S., according to a press release.
But the market is expected to grow from $800 million in 2012 to $1.2 billion by 2031.
The companies are pushing hard to create an increase in sales, but they're trying to do it without big gains. That's because Pfizer's share of the U. erectile dysfunction market has fallen more than 10 percent in the past few months.
"We're looking at a market that is very, very healthy. We've seen a huge increase in sales, but the number of men who are taking Viagra is increasing," said Mike Tach, president of the American Men's Health Initiative.
The U. market for erectile dysfunction drugs, however, is still small, at about 8 million men, or about 12 percent of the U. population.
About 10 million prescriptions are filled in the U. every year, according to Pfizer, which has more than 800 of its medicines in stock. The company's revenue is expected to decline by 6 percent in coming years.
In the United States alone, about half of all prescriptions filled are for erectile dysfunction drugs.
Pfizer is expanding its erectile dysfunction drugs division, including Viagra, and is seeking to develop a new product, named Sildenafil, to treat a variety of erectile dysfunction conditions, including the male reproductive organ, called the corpus cavernosum.
"We don't think it's a big thing," said John O'Brien, president of the Men's Health Initiative of the American Men's Health Initiative.
The first of many of the new drugs will be developed by Sanofi, which has its own drug company, the Sanofi-Aventis group, which produces the drug.
In the meantime, the companies have other products, including a new erectile dysfunction drug, which is also the company's first product to be developed in the U.
Viagra, which Pfizer is planning to launch by next year, is expected to lose patent protection this year, as new generic competition from Pfizer's erectile dysfunction drug is expected to be competitive in the U. market.
The drug, which has U. sales of $2.9 billion, will be sold under the brand name Revatio, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
In the U. S., Viagra is the company's third drug to be developed in the U. and first to be marketed in that country.

Viagra was developed by Sanofi, which said in a statement that it had consulted with Pfizer and Sanofi-Aventis in early January about the drug's development.
